Sunshade has been developed to protect all smooth-skinned fleshy fruits from the harmful effects of heat and UV radiation in sub-tropical areas. Farmers wishing to improve the appearance and seasonal yield of fruit crops will benefit from regular applications of Sunshade.

Product Description

Sunshade is a proprietary formulation of Kaolin and Copper Oxychloride developed by Delta Chemicals (Pty) Ltd. It contains a very fine silica-free kaolin, commonly used as a food additive and in cosmetics. Kaolin is considered safe for humans and the environment. This wettable powder adheres well to the fruit and does NOT need any addition of wetters or stickers. When sprayed on fruit and vegetables, it forms a physical barrier to act against heat stress and sunburn. It also contains Copper Oxychloride, which is used in the well-known fungicide Demildex and therefore assists in the eradication of certain diseases.

Product Application

It is essential to apply Sunshade before the risk of sunburn occurs and then, to maintain fruit coverage. This usually means that fruit is sprayed every 14 days during the season. The standard spray can be used. A dilute suspension is made up and sprayed at a recommended dosage of 30kg per hectare, per 1000 liters of water.

Better Coverage For Superior Protection

Optimal particle size is a critical factor in the outstanding performance of Sunshade. “Particle size” is a term that refers to the average diameter of the particles in the product. The best performance is attained from 1 to 2-micron particles.

The smaller the particle, the more significant the coverage, and this factor govern performance and protection indices. For horticultural coating agents, the tenacity coefficient is a measure of the product’s ability to stick to the plant and hence, gives an excellent guide to its resistance to weathering from rainfall or overhead irrigation.
